SCHOLARSHIP TO U.S UNIVERSITY
ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION’S OFFER The California branch of the English-speaking Union has established a scholarship to the University of California, open to graduates of Australian and New Zealand schools of mining, agriculture and related sciences. This advice has been received by the secretary of the Canterbury branch (Mr H. H. P. Ballantyne). Mr J. S. Conroy, an Australian graduate, has been awarded the first scholarship and is now studying agricultural economics in * California. The second award will be made next year to a New Zealander. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a post-graduate student, alternately from Australia and New Zealand. Funds tp initiate the scholarship were raised through sponsorship of a gala first night performance of the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet when it toured America last year. It is thought that in time the plan will become reciprocal through sponsorship by groups in Australia and New Zealand which will make it possible for American students to enjoy similar opportunities for study in those two countries.
