WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

COMPETITIONS TO OPEN ON SATURDAY The Canterbury Women’s Softball Association has announced that the interprovincial tournament will be held in Oamaru next March. A team to tour Australia ,in 1954 will be chosen after the tournament. Competition play in the Canterbury area will begin on October The Canterbury committee has decided in favour of semi-finals and finals this season Instead of the usual point score system. To overcome the umpire shortage, two rounds of matches will be played. ’the first round commencing at 1.45 p.m and the second round at 3.15 p.m. Each team will be responsible for providing two umpires. Seven school teams will compete. Two teams this season will be fielded ny Jeanette, Buckett’s Gymnasium, and Rangiora. The Jeanette team has been promoted to the first grade. Buckett’s, last season’s champion team, does not appear to have a strong side. Sumner has good players in M. Orr and I. Rowe, and Railways will be well represented with two teams. Belfast, Kaiapoi, and Training College all have experienced players.
