EROSION IN UPPER WAIMAKARIRI
AERIAL SURVEY TO BE MADE Nor ‘ h Canterbury Catchment Board on Friday authorised its chief engineer (Mr H. M. Reid) to carry out an aerial survey of erosion below the river 6 bmdge on the Waimakariri The decision was an outcome of a letter from Messrs H. O. Judd, R. W Skurr, and T._ L. Jenkins, who said that serious erosion was now occurring on their river flats, comprising 250 acres of good wheatgrowing land, lhey asked for a cut or channel to be constructed at the Gorge bridge, where the river makes a turn, to help to keep lt; away from the south bank. Mr Reid, who had inspected the area from the air, said the suggestion to turn the river was almost impossible, but after discussions with another engineer who had seen the position from the ground, he believed that some relief could be given by rope and other protection works. A survey would be needed, he said. To finance protection works, he said the ratepayers would have to make some contribution and a subsidy would have to be sought.
