NEW CHIEF OF NAVAL STAFF

Captain Sir Charles Madden ARRIVAL IN N.Z. NEXT YEAR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 6. The Government has' accepted the Admiralty’s nomination of Captain Sir Charles Madden, R.N., in the rank of commodore (second class) to Commodore F. A. Ballance, R.tf., as First Naval Member and Chief of the New Zealand Naval Staff. This was announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald), who said that Captain Sir Charles Madden would arrive about February. Captain Sir Charles Madden, who is 46, is a son of the late Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden, who was First Sea Lord from 1927 to 1930, and is a nephew of the late Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe, of Scapa, a previous Governor-General of New Zealand. He entered the Royal Navy in 1920. was promoted commander in 1939, and served as executive officer in H.M.S. Warspite from 1940 to 1942, being mentioned in dispatches. He was at the Admiralty as Deputy Director of the Gunnery Division, and later in 1945 commanded the escort carrier H.M.S. Emperor, being again mentioned in dispatches. Promoted captain in 1946, he served as naval assistant to the First Sea Lord, and from 1948 to 1949 he was commanding officer of H.M.S. Battleaxe and captain (D) 6th Destroyer Flotilla.

Captain Sir Charles Madden attended the Imperial pefence College in 1950, and is at present attached to the Ministry of Defence.
