“ MATCH FOR MODERN BOMBER”

Britain’s ajr defences, tested for two days by the biggest mock attack since the war, are a match for the modern bomber, the Air Officer Commanding Fighter Command (Air-Marshal Sir Basil Embry) said tonight as the first phase of “Exercise Ardent" ended. Jet fighters taking part ip the mock battle over Ipswich today were heard to break the soupd barrier repeatedly as they dived ip to attack. The fighters were believed to be Sabre jets from the American and Canadian Air Forces stationed ip East Anglia. Today the bomber forces of six North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations “raided” London, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Glasgow. Fighters flew more sorties than were ever made in a single day during the Battle of Britain.

In Yorkshire. 100 paratroopers were dropped over military targets by Hastings transport aircraft. The paratroopers landed uninjured and um? pires on the ground estimated that the operation was a success.
