OWNER’S PLANS FOR DALRAY
NOT A STARTER IN MELBOURNE CUP
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 6. The brilliant New Zealander, Dalray, will not start in the Melbourne Cup. The owner (Mr C. Neville) said after the horse’s Metropolitan win today that he would scratch Dalray because “with 9-6 in the Cup he already has too much weight and I assume that following today’s win he will be further'penalised. “It is my greatest wish to win the Queen’s Cup next Saturday and as far as I am concerned after that Dalray will return home.” Mr Neville said that Australians had never seen Dalray really gallop because every time he had raced in Sydney the tracks had been like a quagmire “and Dalray is not at his best in heavy going.” The trainer, C. McCarthy, said he had been against starting Dalray m the Metropolitan, but one thing that had persuaded him in favour of starting the horse was the difference be-' tween Sydney and New Zealand tr "ln S 'New Zealand the tracks have a good deal of clay in them, and when they are wet they become very sticky“However, on the Sydney tracks, the sandy nature of the ground makes a wet track less of a hindrance to a ,horse,'' McCarthy said.
