ANAND’S PROGRAMME

TO TRAIN FOR SANTA ANITA CARNIVAL (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, October 6. The crack former New Zealand two-year-old Anand is soon to be brought into training at Santa Anita, California, in preparation for the big Santa Anita race carnival, extending over January, February, and March. This information is contained in a letter to Anand’s breeder, Mr W. R. .Stead, of Hastings, from the American owner, Mr L. E. Hutson, who bought Anand when he was champion two-year-old last season. Mr Hutson says that on arrival in America, Anand was turned out on his ranch for three months, then for the next two months was given light work on the property. Mr Hutson asks in his letter for information on how Anand was trained, stating that in California it is customary to "gallop the horses two miles a day, with a breezing work-out every fourth day. It is my understanding that in New Zealand it is the practice of trainers to give them longer gallops.” A breezing work-out is the equivalent of the sharpening gallop in New Zealand on two or three mornings a week, according to the condition of the horse. Mr Hutson adds that Anand has been given every opportunity, and that he will have the best of care and training so that he can show his true calibre in the States. Anand, by Red Mars from Freezia 11, won six out of eight races tn New Zealand last Reason, his first five in succession.
