MELBOURNE CUP PLANS

MR NEVILLE’S VIEW TELEPHONE TALK FROM SYDNEY Mr Cyril Neville, Dalray’s owner, last evening telephoned his wife at Greymouth, and indicated that he did not think Dalray would remain in Australia for the Melbourne Cup. Dalray would be certain to earn a penalty for his Metropolitan success, and Mr Neville said he thought that the horse was already overweighted for the event. Penalties for the Melbourne Cup are not announced until 12 hours after the success of any candidates in any major prior events. Mr Neville said Dalray had not been in any way distressed by the outing, and he was definitely not blowing on returning to scale. Possibly the only other race in which Dalray will start during his Australian visit, according to Mr Neville, is the engagement in the Queen’s Gold Cup Handicap, of one mile and a half, which is to be run next Saturday. Dalray has the maximum weight of 9-5, and would be a definite starter, he said. The trophy for this is given by the Queen, and it is governed by inter-State allocation. Mr Neville said that Nuttall told him he had no occasion at all to use his whip on Dalray. Nuttall’s success on Dalray has earned for him a bungalow in Christchurch, a promise which will be honoured by Mr Neville.
