MEMORIAL TO KING

Plan For Statue In London (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 4. Mr Churchill, in a broadcast tonight, announced that a statue of King George VI would be erected in London. Mr Churchill was launching a National Memorial Fund, which is being organised by the Lord Mayor of London (Sir Leslie Boyce). Mr Churchill said the memory of the late King would be kept alive in a permanent foundation for “the spiritual. mental and physical needs of the young and the old.” He referred to the Duke of York’s Camp for Boys, which the late King founded before he came to the Throne. He said the memorial foundation would carry still further the excellent work already done for youth. “It woula have pleased the King that the old as well as the young should benefit from the sums of money dedicated to his memory,” Mr Churchill said.
