September fl More than £1,000,000 in taxatin. had been collected last year after in vestigations by 17 inspectors of th. Inland Revenue Department, said th. Minister in charge of the (Mr C. M. Bowden) when the HouS of Representatives to-day considered the vote for the department. 0 The total amount was £1.240,000 and much of this had been recovered from what otherwise would have been un disclosed incomes, he said. This sum was more than sufficient to have run the department last year. un Mr Bowden said it was estimate that £2,790,000 of unpaid income tax was still outstanding, compared win, £2.780,000 a year ago. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash): What does the department esti mate to be the amount outstanding from those who endeavour to ev.d. the tax? ae Mr W. A. Sheat (Government Pateaß You’ll have to look into the crystal. Mr Bowden said that there was no chance of knowing, but it could be several million pounds. It always had been in recent years. Good had resulted from having more inspectors, though the department would be glad to have more. The knowledge that inspectors were operating in a particular district might well encourage those to pay who might otherwise evade the taxation Mr Nash asked whether the £1,240,000 brought in as a result of the inspectors’ investigations was from undisclosed incomes. Mr Bowden: In the main, yes.
