“AMPLE STOCKS OF COTTON WOOL”
IMPORT CONTROL TO BE MAINTAINED fN«w Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 9. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr J. T. Watts) said, in reply to an inquiry to-night, that there were ample stocks of cotton wool in New Zealand at present. He had been asked to amplify a circular received by the Auckland Hospital Board from the Health Department, expressing surprise that the board had obtained its cotton wool from overseas, and had apparently ignored the expressed wish of the department to place its orders in New Zealand. It was stated at a meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board that New Zealand cotton woo! was 35 per cent, dearer th'hn English cotton wool. Mr Watts said that, under the Government's policy, cotton wool was still subject to strict import control., as a local industry Was concerned in its manufacture. Till the item was examined by the Board of Trade, it was not proposed to alter the present policy.
