RAILWAY WORKER KILLED
STRUCK BY TRAIN (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 9. A railway worker was killed when he was struck by a train just south of Pukenui station, near Papatoetoe, 13 miles south of Auckland, at 7.40. a.m. to-day. He was Ned Peita, aged 52, married, with eight children, of Motatau, near Kawakawa, North Auckland. Mr Peita, a member of a travelling gang, was working on the line a short distance from his fellow workers. Trains on both lines were approaching, but in spite of shouted warnings Mr Peita did not appear to see the south-bound train which struck him.
MAN PINNED BELOW TRUCK BODY FOUND NEAR WAIROA (New Zealand Press Association) WAIROA. September 9. A man was found dead this morning at Willow Flat, near Wairoa. He had been pinned beneath an overturned truck. The man was John Haraki, aged 30, a married man with four children. CHILD FOUND DEAD IN COT Noel Trevor Richards, aged nine months, the son of Mr and Mrs T. A. F. Richards, of 193 Union street, New Brighton, was found dead in his cot at 10.30 p.m. yesterday. The child was placed in his cot at 8 p.m. At 10.30 p.m. Mr Richards, whose bed is in the same room, noticed that the child was lying on his face. When he turned the child over he found that he was dead. An inquest will be opened this morning before the Coroner, Mr E. B. E. Taylor. PEDESTRIAN INJURED Mrs Kathleen Holstein, of 6 Airdale place, was admitted t 0 the Christchurch Public Hospital with head injuries at 5.20 p.m. yesterday. Mrs Holstein was struck by a motor-cycle while crossing High street rear the Tuam street intersection. Her condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
