HURUNUI BEATS MARLBOROUGH B
SIX-POINT MARGIN ON HEAVY GROUND
Hurunui beat Marlborough B by 9 points to 3 on a heavy ground at KaiKoura on Saturday. Hurunui won because the backs were more enterprising. Hurunui opened up play in the early stages, and obtained two tries from passing, movements. For Hurunui, B. Hassall (halfback), R. Brown (second five-eighths), and the two wing three-quarters, N. Wistle and G. Smith, played well. C. D. Smith, L. Fleming, and G. Loe were the best of a hardworking pack. Of the Marlborougti forwards, £. Hansen, L. Gibbons, P. Hope, and T. Geffs and J. Weston, were prominent. W. Forsyth (full-back) and C. Boyce (left wing three-quarters), were the only backs who impressed. Tries for Hurunui were scored by Wistle (2) and Barnes. Weston scored Marlborough’s only try. The referee was Mr V. J. Corbett. In a curtain-raiser match, the final of the Hurunui Sub-union’s junior knock-out competition for the Star and Garter rosebowl, Cheviot A beat Kaikoura by 9 points to 3. The referee was Mr E. H. Toner. In a match at Waikari on Saturday, the Hurunui junior representatives beat a Canterbury fourth grade team, 16-9.
