CURRENT NOTES

Mr Harold Williams, the Australian baritone, is at present paying a short visit to Christchurch with his wife on their way from England to Sydney, where he will take up a professorship at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music. Mr Williams will leave on Friday for Wellington and Auckland. Results of the third round of the club pairs played by the Christchurch Contract Bridge Club were:—North and south: Mrs C. A Wellington girl, Miss Judith Watt, ■has been selected for a ballet to be danced in a Roman arena this month. Miss Watt was awarded a Government bursary in 1951, arid has been studying in London for the last year. Mrs W. Milne Shand gave an interesting demonstration of arranging flowers in troughs and posy bowls at the monthly meeting of the Spreydon Garden Club. Mrs H. Sturge presided. Competition results were as follows: Best bloom: Mrs H. J. Burley 1, Mrs R. Hulston 2, Mrs W. Gibson 3. Decorated miniature container: Miss G. Newman 1, Mrs Gibson 2, Mrs W. Wilkinson 3.
