HOCKEY

MATCHES IN THIRD ROUND Grounds were fast and hard for the playing of the third round of the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competitions on Saturday, although the bumpy surface caused much bad stopping. High School Old Boys made the pace too fast, and beat Selwyn by 3 goals to 0 in a game which produced very little science. Woolston had a hard battle to beat University, 4-3, but Technical had little trouble to beat Harewood, 4-1. At Williamson Park a splendid playing surface favoured good stick play, and in an interesting game Sydenham beat Trinity, 3-1. Championship points are:—Woolston 3, Sydenham 2J, Technical 2, University IJ, High School Old Boys 14, Trinity 1, Harewood J, Selwyn 0. H. 5.0.8. v. SELWYN Selwyn never looked like a senior side when it met Old Boys in a game that was generally poor. I. Armstiong and R. Ritchie, Old Boys right inside and right wing, gave many glimpses of combined passing, and D. Sloane was safe in the backs, his clearing shots being well timed and placed. R. Cummins, at centre-half, gave his forwards plenty of the ball, and usually broke up the Selwyn movements. D. Reid, in the Old Boys backs, gave too much away by infringements. D. Tilley kept his goal clear on the few occasions Selwyn got through to the circle. Selwyn’s game was ragged, and without the nippy Blakely at centre-half, the iront-rankers lacked punch in the attacks. Herron made several solo efforts that gained only a few yards, and fully demonstrated the futility of solo play. G. Biltcliff made several useful runs on the right, but his centres went begging. The halves were only fair, and gave the forwards little support. Lack of organised attack and absence of combination were Selwyn’s main faults. Old Boys’ passes were more accurately placed, and the fielding was much better. Goals were scored for Old Boys by I. Armstrong (2) and Blythe. Umpires: Messrs R. Bay and A. Ostler. WOOLSTON V. UNIVERSITY Woolston beat University in one of the best matches of tlie season. Right from the initial bully the game provided clever stickwork and ball control. Similar tactics were used by both right insides, Hannah of Woolston, and Walter of University, and both players gave many exhibitions of clever ball control.. Hannah’s goal which won the match was brilliant. Collecting a pass from Cotton. Hannah flashed across the goal-mouth to the left, and with a flick put the ball into the right-hand corner of the net. L. Templeton was the pick of the halves and stopped the University left wing efforts, and both Abrams and L. Hobson defended well. In goal, Ferry gave a sound display, but was overshadowed by P. Froome, who saved University’s goal time after time. Apart from a tendency to come out too much. Froome gave an excellent display, and on his game should enter the representative side this year. Led by C. V. Walter, the University forwards made some clever raids, but most of their efforts were confined to the centre. J. Mann and E. Archer played well in the halves, but both backs were weak and lacked punch in their clearing shots. Goals were scored for Woolston by N. Hobson (2), Hannah, and Rummell, and for University by Adcock (3). I Umpires: Messrs R. Bay and W. D. i Sloane. TECHNICAL V. HAREWOOD In a fast, open game, Technical showed superior combination and stickwork to beat Harewood by 4 goals to 0. From the : initial bully. Technical settled down to 1 play sterling hockey, McKinnon, Dale, and Roberts being prominent. Dale's goal from a reverse stick shot from McKinnon was excellent. In the halves, Len Lloyd and Kissell were outstanding. The pick of the backs was B. Roberts. Brown in goal excelled himself. Harewood played solidly and with plenty of dash, but lacked combination. Currie , was a capable inside right, and T. Kearns I was sound at left wing. P. Greenwood was the pick of the halves. Wornall and Pauli in the backs had a heavy day. : Reagan kept well. Goals for Technical were scored by Bur- ’ rows, McKinnon, and Dale (2), one from 1 a penalty bully, and for Harewood Kearns scored. ’ Umpires: Messrs J. Mann and N. Hock--1 ing. SYDENHAM V. TRINITY It was not until the second spell was well under way that Sydenham asserted itself against Trinity to win 3-1. 1 The ground at Williamson Park was deceptively fast, and it took the players some time to settle down, in the first club I game to be played there. Teams coming j to the ground will find It difficult to adjust j themselves, for it lends itself to clever a control and placing. , Trinity had the better of the early exchanges, and R. Partington scored Its I only goal when the ball rolled free after ' the inside forwards had given Rhlnd a hot time in goal. Sydenham evened be1 fore the spell, W. Speedy scoring. Sydenham had been given little time to ' settle down by the nippy Trinity tackling, but it built up strong attacks in the : second spell, and K. Cumberpatch made a perfect opening with a high tossed ball that hit the post, R. Calvert scoring. . Trinity reacted strongly, and two shots i’ hit the post and a third was excellently 1 saved by Rhind. Then Cumberpatch scored Sydenham’s third goal from a pass , from I. Smith. 6 Umpires; Messrs B. W. Rogers and K. a Hamilton. j LOWER GRADES 3 Results in lower grades were:— ,1 Senior Reserve.—Selwyn 3.
