BIG DIVIDENDS AT RICCARTON

GRAND BOY’S WIN A Riccarton record for dividends was probably set when Grand Boy won the Yaldhurst Handicap on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meet n g on Saturday. Grand Eoy paid £382 5s 6d for a win and £77 9s 6d for a place. He carried £l2 10s for a win and £2S 10s for a place, all from on-course betting. Ridden by A. C. Peake. Grand Boy won narrowly from Cock Crow, with West Riding a close and an unlucky third.

A four-year-old entire by Siegfried from Chop Suey, Grand Boy was bred and is owned and trained by Mr A. M. A. Englebrecht, of Waimate. Mr Englebrecht had £2 each way on the horse. He told “The Press” that his bet was smaller than usual but it had been a very good day for him.

"I was very pleased when the two-year-old Chowder, which I bred, ran second in the Richmond Handieao later in the day,” said Mr Englebrecht. “The other horse I had in to-day, Granddaughter, did not go so well—she finished last in the Merivale Handicap—but still I can't complain. “Most of the credit for Grand Boy’s win to-day should go to bis jockey. He is a capable boy,” he said. Two of the lucky collectors of the big dividend were the brothers M. R. and P. H. Jones, both jockeys, who invested between them 10s each way on Grand Boy. They received over £lOO each.

Practically speechless with excitement. they spent little time in making their way to the pay-out window after the race. P. H. Jones explained why he and his brother backed Grand Boy. “We both come from Timaru.” he said, “and this horse comes from down there too. We’ve seen him gallop and we know how good he is. He's a brother to another good one. Chowder, which is starting later in the day.” Chon Suey. the dam of Grand Boy. Chowder, and Granddaughter, w-ns bred at the Otautau stud by Mr A. Chisholm, owner of West Riding, which was an unlucky third behind Grand Boy. By Salmagundi from Enwood. Chon Suev was Purchased from Mr Chisholm by Mr M" J. Meehan, of Waimate. and she was a winner.
