SHORTAGE OF CLERGY

LONDON, March 2. The Bishop of Chichester (Dr. George Bell) to-day warned that the decline in the number of Church of England clergy was likely to become catastrophic. In a pastoral letter, Dr. Bell stated that the 20,000 English parish clergy in England in 1914 had been reduced to 15,000 by 1951. Assistant curates,who numbered 4554 in 1938, had fallen to 2189 in 1948.
