IMMIGRATION
Sir, —In reply to your correspondent M. G. Davies I cannot but help notice the complete lack of feeling or humanism in it. For overstatement and downright smugness it certainly takes some beating. Apparently it was written by a man. For I doubt if any woman would or could produce such statements about the human race. So the United States got into an appalling state through her immigration plans. She did all right in 1917-18 and 41-45 and her “stock” will do all right when the balloon goes up again. what we need is fewer and better people. Without being a burden to State, people, etc. How lofty and idealistic! How commendable! Will M. G. Davies come off it, please, leave his ivory castle and get educated in life before it is too late?—Yours, etc, WILLIAM RUSSELL. Hanmer, February 30, 1952
