AMBERLEY EWE FAIR

STANDARD lines sell WELL LOWER prices for TWO-TOOTHS values, although sound, were very .rratic at the Amberley (northern Action) ewe fair, which was held yesErfay. As in previous years, the at* tendance of buyers was not as great as at the first sale, held a week before. Nevertheless. the buying strength was Lhere-at a price Fancy prices did not rule for two-tooths, but considering the quality of the sheep there was no evidence of recession in values. For iu standard lines of adult sheep late values were obtained, and in one or two instances they appeared to be a ‘itt'e dearer than last week’s sales. Leas attractive lines and small lots w£ -e Slower of sale and showed a fall o£ 3s to 4s a head. The entry totalled 19,211 against 17,661 last year- and induced 5996 two-tooths against 5682 last year. The majority of the sheep came from the hill country round Cheviot and from the Marlborough district, practically the whole yarding being hill ewes. In both sections there was , fair proportion of very good sheep, but erratic climatic conditions accounted for the poorer quality of part of the offerings. The demand for pre-lambing shorn tl es was at a greater discount than at even the two previous sales. Some buyers were definitely disinclined to bid on these sheep sS d prices suffered in consequence—there was some very cheap wool sold on the jheep's back. Several buyers in an exchange of confidences around the pens uid that they were prepared to pav up to 10s more a head for extra goodmouthed sheep, if they had been summerborn. Top price for the sale was £4 ss, as compared with £5 9s at Amberley (southern section) a week ago, and £5 12s at Hawarden on Thursday. Comparisons however, are difficult, as at both of the two earlier sales a great number of the two-tooths were paddock-fed. It will be tecalled that last year the Amberley (northern section) was the best sale to that date for two-tooths. The. discrepancy this year is somewhat difficult to gnderstand, but is perhaps best explained by the effect of the prolonged wet weather in the early part of the season and the dry spell after Christmas thia accounting for the poorer condition it the offering. In the face of a smaller gathering of buyers the sale opened hesitantly but after 10 or so pens had been disposed of „ settled down to prices which on a quality basis were much the same as last week. However, towards the end of the aale, with a better quality offering, prices hardened considerably and the general tone of the market improved values rising by 3s to 5s a head. Pur-' chases were made for all Canterbury districts and were more widespread than usual. Top price of the day, £4 ss, was for a line of 71 early-shorn ewes from J G Murray (Woodbank), whilst J. R. Murray (Woodbank) made 83s for 69 and a urnilar price was paid for 70 from C W Denton iDomett). Mr Denton also sold another pen at 795. W. A. Douglas (Jedburgh) realised 81s for a pen of 76 At Cthe corresponding sale last year the top ee of £8 10s was secured by Mr Deni for a pen of 72 sheep, whilst J, G Murray's best price was £8 ss, and the Kuglas* 0 ' WaS paid f ° r “ Une from Mr The adult sheep were an average offering for the second Amberley fair, and the condition of some pens could have been improved on. Top price for four-year-old ewes was 72s for a line of 292 from Dou Klas (Jedburgh), whose fine of 282 last year made £6 4s. PF Childs (Fernhill) realised 70s for 202 his line last year of 202 four and five-vear-(Mount Sandford) sold 322 at 70s, his last vear’s Jot of 300 making £6 2s. Top price last f 2 r 213 X rom w H. PLEASANT POINT EWE FAIR “The Press” Special Service PLEASANT POINT, March 3. Approximately 9000 Romney cross twotooth ewes were yarded at to-day;s twotooth ewe fair at Pleasant Point. With an odd exception, quality was only medium several pens of sheep being late shorn and poorly brought out.
