CLASSROOMS OF ALUMINIUM

TRIAL SATISFACTORY

SO FAR

So far the prefabricated aluminium classrooms at the West Spreydcn School are reported to be Comfortable and efficient, but an official opinion is being withheld by the Canterbury Education Board until more experience of this type -of construction has been obtained. This comment was made yesterday by Mr A. Manning, chairman of the board’s building committee which recommended this trial of the first prefabricated aluminium classrooms in the South Island. , In this month's hot, weather the teachers and children using the building have found that the sunshine on the metal does not penetrate oopressively because of the glass wool insulation and hardboard lining, and that the windows give good ventilation and no serious glare. The unit was erected by unskilled labour in one week, just before the Christmas holidays, but occupation had to wait until February. An official opening ceremony was conducted yesterday by Mr S. J. Irwin, chairman of the Education Board, who spoke of the interest in the experiment as a means of rapid construction to meet school building needs. The unit consists of two classrooms, a cloak-room, and corridor, and most of the sunny side has windows.
