Although the demand had been as great as ever, the supply of oysters had left a lot to be desired, said an Invercargill fish merchant, commenting on the first oyster catch of the season. The oysters were small, but should improve in about a month when the weather became cooler. In the catch last Saturday there was a lot of “rubbish,” said one merchant A fair percentage of the oysters were definitely not up to regulations, and it was a long and tedious job opening the small ones.
