16 Candidates For U.N. Membership

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)

(Rec. 10 p.m.) PARIS, January 18. The United Nations Political Committee to-day will again tackle the controversy over the admission to the United Nations of States whose entry is opposed by the East or West. The 16 candidates for admission are: Austria, Ceylon, Eire, Finland, Italy, Jordan, Libya, Nepal, Portugal, South Korea, and Vietnam (all barred by Russia), and Albania, Bulgaria. Hungary, Outer Mongolia, and Rumania (barred by the West). The West’s objection is that the five Communist countries have not proved themselves worthy of admission. Russia has vetoed the entry of the other 11 and has demanded the entry of all candidates “en bloc.”

The Latin American States, in opening the debate to-day, are expected to press strongly for the admission of Italy and Portugal. Russia, supported by some Arab and Asian countries, will probably renew its offer to admit all candidates together.
