COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

NEW SECRETARY ARRIVES The Rev. Allan T. McNaughton, for the last 17 years Director of Religious Education for the Presbyterian Church of Australia, arrived at Harewood yesterday morning by °kymaster from Melbourne to take -up the post of secretary of the National Council of Churches in New Zealand. Mr McNaughton was accompanied by his wife, his two daughters, aged 14 and 12 years, and his two sons, aged eight and six years. Among those who met the group at the airport were the retiring secretary of the Council (the Rev. Alan A. Brash) and the Rev. J. Baird, who is a member of the executive of the National Council of Churches. Mr McNaughtoji was born in Dunedin and educated at Otago Boys’ High School and Otago University. After graduating M.A., with first class honours in English and Latin in 1921, he taught at Otago Boys’ High School. In 1931 he went to the United States of America to study for the ministry at the Yale Divinitv School and in 1934 he graduated bachelor of divinity. Two months later he was appointed to the Australian post he has held for the last 17 years. On his arrival yesterday Mr McNaughton said that in his Australian position he had had some experience of co-operative work among the churches, and he was hopeful that in New Zealand he would be further able to promote inter-church relations.
