OBITUARY
MR D. H. KENNEDY The death occurred in Christchurch recently of Mr Daniel Higgins Kennedy, aged 54. Mr Kennedy retired xrom the teaching profession on account of illness about 12 months ago. At the time of his retirement, he was headmaster of the newly opened Wairakei Road School. Mr Kennedy commenced his teaching career in 1920 as a pupil-teacher at the Lyttelton West School. He completed his training at the Christchurch Training College, and he then served as an assistant-master at the Allenton, Hornby, and New Brighton District High Schools. His next appointment was that of headmaster of the Karitane School in Otago. He was later headmaster of the Kakanui. Dunsandel, and Wairakei Road Schools. The Wairakei school was opened in February, 1950, with Mr Kennedy as its first headmaster. Throughout his teaching career Mr Kennedy took a keen interest in music, and school sports, particularly football and cricket. He was also interested in tennis, athletics, swimming, and golf. While teaching at New Brighton he was a member of the Rawhiti Golf Club In recent years he took up bowls, and he was a member of the bowling clubs at Dunsandel and for a short time at Papanui. Mr Kennedy was born at Loburn, North Canterbury, and was the second son of the late Murtagh and Catherine Kennedy. He is survived by his widow, and one son. Paul Kennedy, of Bryndwr, and by three brothers and four sisters.
