MEAT TRANSPORT IN AUSTRALIA
SUBSIDY GRANTED TO AID PRODUCTION (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, January 18. The Commonwealth Government will make a grant of about £lO,OOO a year until 1954 to Air Beef Proprietary Ltd., according to the Minister of National Development (Senator W H. Spooner). Assistance will be at the rate of Id per lb on beef marketed , B< ; ef Proprietary, Ltd. began in 1948 with a capital of £15,000 subscribed equally by Australian National Airways, the Macßobertson Miller Aviation Company, and a group of pastoralists in Western Australia. The State Government gave the company an interest-free loan of £lO,OOO for three years. The company operates an inland killing works at the Glenroy Station in the Kimberteys and transports the meat to the coast by air, using Bristol Freighter aircraft. Senator Spooner says that the Government will support the company as part of its policy to increase food production.
The Kimberleys is one area within Australia where beef production can be increased, but is retarded because of the lack of transport Previously the cattle were taken overland to the abattoirs, the journey sometimes taking U P to a year.
