OBITUARY
MRS MARTHA ASHER

WELLINGTON, January 16. The death occurred in Palmerston North yesterday of Mrs Martha Asher. Cbieftainess of the Wa'rarapa district. She was aged about 65. She was the daughter of the paramount Wairarapa Chieftain, Tamahou Mahupuku, who was baptised by an early missionary, William Colenso, at the Pahau river mouth about 100 years ago. He was Chief of the Ngati Hikawera and Ngati Kahukuranui sub-tribes of the Ngati Kahungunu. Mrs Asher went to school with Katherine Mansfield and finished her education in London and Paris. Katherine Mansfield wrote an unpublished book about her Maori friend. Mrs Asher was twice married. Mrs Asher will be buried in the family burial ground near Martinborough.
