HIRED TELEPHONE TO BOOKMAKER

GROCER’S ASSISTANT FINED £2O (New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, January 11. For aiding Keith Cochrane Cleland in bookmaking, William John Brunt, aged 27, a grocer’s assistant, was today fined £2O by Mr J. W. Kealy, S.M, in the Magistrate’s Court at Auckland. ;

The police said that Cleland, who had used the telephone in Brunt’s home at Mount Eden for betting purposes, had been fined £125 for bookmaking. Brunt told the police that Cleland paid him £2 a race day for the use of the telephone. Brunt had not been in trouble before.
