MODERN AIRPORT LIGHTING
NEW SYSTEM INSTALLED AT WHENUAPAI
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 14. One of the most modern airport lighting systems for bad weather landings in the world has been installed at Whenuapai. Only minor details remain to be completed. The system has been used and praised by overseas airline pilots. So bright are the lights that if they were turned full on m fair weather they would blind approaching pilots. They are therefore controlled according to the weather.
The airfield also has a low-intensity system on all runways for normal weather operation. Complete landing facilities have now been installed at the other main airports—Paraparaumu and Harewood—enabling the National Airways Corporation to augment summer schedules with late evening services.
From Monday there will be a daily flight from Auckland to Wellington and Christchurch, leaving at 6.10 p.m and arriving four hours later at the Christchurch Airport. Douglas airliners will arrive at Whenuapai soon after .10 p.m. from Dunedin and direct from Christchurch.
