GREYS MAY WIN CUPS DOUBLE

The odds against greys winning the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups are astronomical, but an Australian writer draws attention to the prospects of Durham and Grey Boots winning that double this year. Greys winning the cups have been a rarity, but with the advent of the progeny of the imported sire Nizami the prospects have become less remote. Durham and Grey Boots are two of his sons. Hiraji (by Nizami), the Melbourne Cup winner of 1947, was the first grey to win the two-miler since Toryboy was successful in 1865 in the fifth Melbourne Cup. Last season Grey Boots added to the record of greys in big races by winning the Caulfield Cup from Chicquita. Durham has 8-2 in the Caulfield Cup and he is regarded as no "long shot." In less than 18 months he has graduated from winning a maiden plate at Mornington to top-class handicap company. Last season he beat Milford over one mile and a half in the King's Cup at Flemington. He later won over one mile and a half at Caulfield. Grey Boots had only 7-8 when he won the Caulfield Cup last year, and he is up to 8-13 this tlma. The Melbourne Cup, however, may be his spring mission. In this race he has 8-10. Geraldine Club Acceptances and withdrawals for the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting will close with the secretary (L. D. McKenzie) tonight, at 5 p.m. Advt.
