FIRE IN FURNITURE FACTORY
WORK OF *VOLUNTEER BRIGADE PRAISED
When a serious fire broke out on the premises of the Hamilton Furniture Company in Bath street on the evening of August 31, members of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade were settling down to enjoy a social evening They returned, after attending the fire, just as “Auld Lang Syne” was being sung. A tribute to the work of the brigade was paid at a meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board last evening by the acting-chairman (Mr W. R. Campbell). Mr Campbell said that when the alarm was received the firemen went out, through the fire exit, and from the front door, and almost before it was realised there was a fire the men were away. Members of the board had had a first-hand indication of the smartness with which the volunteer brigade could turn out. Members of the board realised the city had acquired an asset in the Sumner Volunteer Brigade. A gift of £5O for the firemen s sports and social activities was received from J M. Mitchell and Company, whose factory, next to the Hamilton Furniture Company, was saved by the brigades.
