HEAVY DEMAND FOR RAILWAY WAGGONS
In an endeavour to relieve coal mines on the West Coast of large stocks of coal which have accumulated in mine bins, the Railways Department sent 100 empty coal trucks to the West Coast yesterday morniqg. Another 100 were sent in the afternoon. More than 1200 empty waggons were sent to the West Coast last week to relieve the pressure on coal bins, and these, together with a further 250 waggons which were sent loaded last week, will be used this week to bring coal stocks to the East Coast. A large potato crop which has just been lifted at Southbridge, and heavy shipping at Lyttelton, have also placed heavy demands on waggon supplies in the last week. Practically the same position will apply this week. In addition waggons must be found for West Coast timber. The majority of these, however, are of the bogie type which are unsuitable for the carrying of coal or other produce.
