BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

NEW MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE The following are biographical notes of the five candidates who were not members of the previous Parliament

and who, on the preliminary count, have been elected to the House of Representatives.

Mr H. Dudfleld (N.), Gisborne Mr H. Dudfleld, who is aged 38, is an inspector in the Department of Health and a few years ago was stationed in Christchurch. He served in the 2nd N.Z.E.F. and last year enlisted for service in K Force and went to Korea with the lank of captain. He flew back to New Zealand to contest the election. Mr Dudfield is deputy-chairman of the Waiapu Hospital Board, a member of the Waiapu County Council and the Tokomaru Bay Harbour Board. Mr J. Hodgens (L.), Palmerston North Mr Hodgens won the Palmerston North seat for Labour in 1935, but retired in 1946 because of Illness in his family. He is a builder and has lived in Palmerston North for the greater part of his life. He has had long service on local bodies in the city and district, including membership of the Palmerston North City Council, the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board and the Palmerston North Licensing Committee. He is a member of the Wellington Harbour Board. Mr J. G. Barnes (N.), St Kilda .

Mr Barnes, who is 43, is employed in the stores manager’s office at the Hillside railway workshops. He served with the 75th New Zealand Bomber Squadron during the war and was awarded the M.B.E. for his services as a prisoner of war for three years. He is at present Deputy-Mayor of Dunedin. Mr Barnes is a former New Zealand athletic champion and was manager of the Dominion's athletic team at the 1950 Empire Games in Auckland.

Mr J. S. Stewart (L), Arch Hill Mr Stewart is an employee of the Auckland Transport Board. He stood for the mayoralty of Auckland last year, as the Labour candidate. He campaigned unsuccessfully for Kaipara in 1943 and for Marsden in 1948.

Mr G. A. Walsh (N.), Tauranga Mr Walsh has his own sheep and dairy farm in Cambridge. He was one of the foundation members of the Dominion council of Federated Farmers and has been prominent in promoting agricultural education, land development, stock improvement, and the extension of veterinary services.
