East Puts New Tax On West Vehicles
(Rec. 8 pan.) BERLIN, September 1. East German officials to-day began taxing West German and West Berlin vehicles bringing food from West Germany into Berlin for the city’s western sector inhabitants. The tax ranged from 15s for motorcycles to £4 5s for lorries—Jo be paid every trip. Drivers refusing to pay are sent The taxes are expected to net East Germany £120.000 a month. Western Allied officials said that there was no ground yet for protesting because Four-Power vehicles were not being taxed. West Berlin officials suggested tax on Erst Berlin and East German vehides passing through West Berlin, as a reprisal.
