SHEARERS’ PAY

Sir, —There has been some comment lately regarding shearers’ pay. When the award was published it was stated

that shearers would be able to earn from £5O to £7O a week. To a blade shearer that is fantastic. I have done four weeks so far this season and have averaged less than £25 a week, and that at much above award rates. Leading men in the Federated Farmers have condemned shearers for asking for more than the minimum award rates. They say sheepowners have stuck to the sliding scale. I think it has slid in their favour. When, wool averaged 12d per lb shearing was 30s a hundred. Last season a lot of Canterbury clips averaged 10s per lb. Even shearers can add that up. Federated Farmers who agree with their leaders won’t have to tell shearers to go somewhere else—they will.—Yours, etc., BLADE SHEARER. September 1, 1951.
