The Waikato Rugby temp, in it* second defence of the Ranfurly Shield at Hamilton on Saturday, surprised most of 1U many supporters by the manner in which it overwhelmed Bay of Plenty by 32 pointe to 10. The Waikato backs dominated the game. , , The game was always bright and open. There was an attendance of 10,000, ana conditions were ideal. Bay of Plenty was never completely subdued, and the score does not give a true indication of its merits. It was only the excellent covering defence of the Waikato team that stopped Bay of Plenty from scoring more points. . Four Waikato players were Injured. Brunskill. the hero of the Auckland match, moved from centre to full-back when Adam was injured, and again he played an outstanding game, scoring a brilliant try and kicking several conversions and penalties. He scored 14 pointe. All the Waikato backs playetWery well, showing speed, penetration, and combination. , ’ . „ Waikato won 14 scrums to six and 23 line-outs to 10. ... . (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, September 2. Before a crowd of 7000, the Fijian Rugby team was beaten by Wanganui on Saturday by 14 pointe to 11. Wanganui s score was made up of two tries, one of them converted, and two penalty goals. Fiji scored three tries, one of which was converted. . . , , It was a fine day. with a fairly strong westerly wind. -The ground was fast and The Fijians were outhooked in the scrums and outplayed in the line-outs and had to rely on spoiling to get possession or to check attacks. At times they were so deadly and fast in tackling that some of the tackles looked to be late tackle*, and at least one was penalised as such. The Fijians kicked freely at any loose ball they could see. When in possession they ran determinedly, but too far, and failed to link up with well-positioned supports. Two backs who impressed were the captain and second five-eighths, Cavalevu, and the centre. Ismail Sauleca. The Wanganui backs, notably Jones and O’Connell, the five-eighths, and S. Thompson, the half-back, combined better, and played more orthodox football. For Wanganui Webby, the wing threequarters, scored a try, kicked two penalty goals, and converted a try scored by '’Connell. Fiji’s scorers were I. Sauleca, Radrodro, the back-row forward, and Cavalevu. Radrodro converted one try.

(New Zealand Pre** Association) NELSON, September 2. The Canterbury Sub-Unions' Rugby team won the fourth match of its tour on Saturday when it beat Golden BayMotueka by 19 points to 16. The sub-unions led by 16 to 8 at half-time. The wing three-quarter, E. H. Richards, was outstanding for Canterbury. He scored three tries and converted two. J. McLean and H. Richards also scored tries. For the combined side V, Ahipene, N. Herries, and F. Papp* scored trie*. W. H. Taylor converted two and kicked a penalty goal.
