OBITUARY
MR T. H. BUTTERFIELD
The death of Mr T. H. Butterfield, a prominent figure in Christchurch local body affairs, occurred on Saturday. He was 72 years old. A popular member of the Labour Party, Mr Butterfield retired from the Christchurch City Council in October last year, and for 18 of the previous 24 years had been a member of the council. He had sat on all major local "bodies in Christchurch. Mr Butterfield was successful on the six occasions on which he stood for the City Council, and his vote increased at each election. He was a member of the works, baths and entertainments committees of the council and was also a member of the Metropolitan Licensing Authority. From 1941 to 1947 Mr Butterfield retired from public life, and on his reappearance was elected to the city Council and the Tramway Board. He had also been a member of the
Drainage Board, Fire Board and Domains Board. For 11 years was a member of the Sydenham School Committee and he sat on two burges : ses’ asociations and on the Papanui Memorial Hall Committee \ Mr Butterfield also took an active interest in sport, playing Rugby football, cricket and hockey for the Sydenham clubs. He was born at Breken River, Canterbury became a foundation member of the Grocers Assistants’ Union, of which he was president for many years and conducted many cases before the ArbitraCoSrt and in conciliation council He was also prominent as a member of the Trades and Labour Council and the North Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. , . , u Mr Butterfield was injured m a rail in October, 1949. Before that he was employed by the General Labourers U Mr” Butterfield was held in ' high esteem beyond the Labour movement al W Butterfield is survived by his widow and two daughters.
