FENDALTON Although nearly 800 .fewer votes were cast in his electorate than in the 1949 election, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) increased his majority on the preliminary count by 40 votes. In the 1949 election, however, the contest was a triangular one. Mr Holland polled 7338 and Mr P. J. Alley (Labour) 3792, giving Mr Holland a majority of 3546. Mr Holland’s majority over the Labour candidate in 1949, Mr R. T. Newman, was 3506 in the preliminary count and 4076 in the final count. The Independent Liberal candidate, Mr J. H. Gilmour, polled 565 in 1949. Fendalton was the first Christchurch electorate to receive its final return, which was in just before 7.30 pan. The first return came in at 7.7 pan. From the garage at 452 Hagley avenue, this return, giving Mr Alley a majority of 1, caused some surprise. Mr Alley also polled better than Mr Holland at the Antigua street, Moorhouse avenue and St. Asaph street polling places. At Normal School 351 votes were cast for each candidate. Mr Holland had the majority at the other 16 polling places, his best support coming from the Clyde road, Fendalton road and Merivale lane booths. Details of the voting were:—

SELWYN Though there was an increase in the roll number for the Selwyn electorate from 16,035 in 1949 to 17,170 for this election, 889 fewer electors voted on Saturday. Mr J. K McAlpine, the National member, increased his majority, however, by 375 on the preliminary counts, from 1370 in 1949 to 1745 on Saturday. On Saturday, Mr McAlpine polled 8018 votes against 6273 votes for the labour candidate, Mr J. G. Barclay. At the 1949 election the voting was 8205 for Mr McAlpine and 6878 for Mr E. A. Sharp, the Labour candidate. Mr Barclay received most support at Howardville, Harewood Transit School, Hornby, Yaldhurst road, Islington, Wanaka road (Upper Riccarton), and Lake Coleridge. Mr McAlpine led at most of the other polling places, his largest majorities being at Paparoa •treet (Papanui), Southbridge, Dun•andel, and College avenue (Papanui). There were only 26 informal votes J® Saturday, compared with 103 at the 1949 election. Details of the voting were:—

St. Albans polled heavily in the last General Election—l3,sBo voting from a roll of 14,518. The roll number has increased considerably to 15,466; but only about 12,500 voted on Saturday. Mr Watts led at all but six of the 22 polling places, but at one (Flockton street) his margin was only one vote. In the others his lead was fairly comfortable and he scored heavily round the Papanui road boundary of his electorate. Mr Mora’s best returns were received at the busy St. Matthew’s schoolroom in Caledonian road, Acheson avenue. Barbadoes street, Shirley Intermediate School, and the neighbourhood of Canon and Champion streets. The first return from Hally road was in at 7.9 p.m., but the count was not completed until nearly 8.30. It was noted that the return to Saturday polling apparently caused a larger number of absentee votes. Details of the voting were:—

Mr R. M. Macfarlane, sitting member for Christchurch Central, retained his seat by a majority of 2735 votes on the preliminary count. With the exception of the Canterbury boatsheds and St. Luke’s Church, every booth gave him a majority. Mr Macfarlane's largest majorities came from the Linwood marquee at the corner of Grafton and Charles streets (majority of 487), the Phillipstown School (509), the Manchester street marquee (196) and the Richmond School (256), all of which have proved strongholds to him in the past. A total of 10,059 valid votes was cast in the electorate, and 33 were informal. This number is 1036 fewer than the figures for the preliminary count in 1949. The roU number for 1951 was 13,438 and for 1949, 13.157. The first returns were recorded at central headquarters by the returning officer, Mr C. J. L. McCree, at 7.10 pin. from St. Paul’s schoolroom. Out of a poll of 13,525 Mr McLagan gained 7893 votes on Saturday. Mr McLagan had majorities at 21 of the 34 polling places. Mr Wills had majorities at most of the rural booths, but they were quickly offset by Mr McLagan’s large majorities in the urban areas. Details of the voting were:—

SYDENHAM

There was a drop of almost 1000 in the total votes cast in the Sydenham electorate compared with the election night figures in 1949, and the sitting member, Miss M. B. Howard (Labour) was returned with a majority of 4132, compared with 5514 on the preliminary count at the previous election. In the 1949 election, Miss Howard’s final majority was 5643 in a total vote of 12,954; in 1946 her majority was 6746 in a vote of 13,380.

The National Party candidate, Mr A. H. Stott, failed to win at any of the 15 polling places, but he reduced Miss Howard’s majority at a number of them, notably at the St. Martins library. At this polling place in 1949 Miss Howard had a majority of 167 in a total of 855; this time the difference was 49 in a total of 877

The heaviest voting in the electorate was at the Sydenham School where 4)32 Votes were cast for Miss Howard and 335 for Mr Stott. Miss Howard also had a big majority at the Waltham School, and at the Sydenham Football Club’s hall, but there was a difference of only 158 in a total of 1122 at the Sydenham Baptist Hall. Details of the voting were:—

WESTLAND Without counting absentee and postal votes, which are expected to total about 1000, 12,421 of Westland’s 15,000 voters went to the poll, according to the completed returns from 91 polling booths. The returns were completed in record time at 8.20 p.m. The voting was about 1000 fewer than at the 1949 election, when the total was 13,747 in an effective roll of 14,608. The weather was fine and sunny for most of the day, wifh showers in the late afternoon. There was a substantial reduction in Mr J. B. Kent’s majority compared with the 1949 election. Both Mr Kent and the National candidate, Mrs I. Brown, spoke from radio station 3YZ after the completion of the initial count.

Voters were thanked for responding to his appeal for early voting by the returning officer, Mr F. S. Collier, who also paid a tribute to the work of the staff and booth clerks for the efficient manner in which the voting was handled. There were no queues at any stage, and in the first hour voting was in excess of a vote a minute in the main booths. One country deputy cycled some 13 miles in pouring rain to telephone his returns. Details of the voting were:—

HURUNUI Although there was a smaller poll in the-Hurunui electorate this year than in 1949, Mr W. H. Gillespie (National) increased his majority over the Labour Party candidate (Mr W. E. Cassidy) by 260. There were 14,397 registered electors on the roll in 1949, and for this election the number was 15,794, but about 1000 fewer people voted this year. Mr Gillespie led in Rangiora, but at Belfast and Kaiapoi the advantage was with Mr Cassidy. In the rural districts, however, Mr Gillespie generally held a substantial advantage. The first result, from Burwood, came to hand a few minutes after seven o’clock, and the returns came in steadily thereafter. The last return was received at 8.25 pan. Details of the voting were:—

SOUTHERN MAORI Mr E. T.' Tirikatene, the sitting Labour member, easily retained the Southern Maori seat, although his majority, 540, was 147 smaller than in the 1949 election. He polled 74.9 per cent, of the valid votes cast, compared with 77.41 per cent, in 1949. Polling was not as heavy as in 1949 when nearly 94 per cent of the roll number voted. This time 1102 votes were cast, apart from postal votes, of a total roll number of 1492—a little more than 70 per cent. The first result was received from Rapaki at/ 7.10 p.m., but it was not

until 10.5 p.m., when the Takaka result reached the returning officer, that the results were completed. ' Details of the voting were:— Tirika-

WAIMATE Mr D. C. Kidd. National Party candidate, was returned for Walmate with a majority of 2093 votes over his Labour opponent, Mr A. G. Bradley. The increase in Mr Kidd’s majority as compared with the 1949 election was the striking feature of the comparatively light poll. A total of 11,598 votes was cast against 13.368 in 1949 when Mr Kidd was returned with a majority of 1737 over the Labour Party candidate, Mr W. R. Davison. Mr M. J. Hayes, a Social Credit candidate. received increased support with a total of 359 votes compared with 217 in the previous election. The effective voting strength on the roll was 14,039. Postal votes may make up an unusually large total, estimated at more than 400. Postal votes have been received from several quarters of the world, including a number from the United Kingdom and Australia, two from Paris, one from Washington and one from Bombay. In addition more than a dozen servicemen’s votes are expected from overseas. Polling proceeded without incident during the day and after the results were announced only a small group of people remained in the street to hear the three candidates speak. Detailed results were 1 :

Details of the voting were:—

Of 62 polling places Mr Gerard won 55 and Mr Rose 7. The country districts voted substantially for the sitting member whose majority was reduced at four of the main booths in the Ashburton borough. Mr Rose was successful in the suburban booths of Ashburton and Rakaia; but Mr Gerard had a considerable lead at Methven, his home district

Of 13,950 persons on the roll more than 12.000 voted. Up to Saturday evening there were 332 postal votes as well as absentee votes and servicemen's votes to be counted. The first result was received from Belfield at 7.8 p.m.
