MERCHANT NAVY CONSTRUCTION

EXPANSION BY JAPAN AND GERMANY (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 26. Japan and Western Germany, in three to five years, will again have powerful merchant navies strong enough to compete seriously with British shipping on the world's oceans says the “Sunday Express." A spate of orders has been placed with Japanese and German yards in the few months since the Allies removed all restrictions on merchant shipbuilding. The principal Japanese and German shipyards now have a total of nearly 1,500.000 tons under construction. Seventeen Japanese yards are building 77 shins while in Hamburg, Emden, and Kiel alone more than 80 ships, totalling 800,000 tons are on order.
