New Elephant for Auckland
The Auckland City Council is making arrangements to buy a young elephant from a trading zoo in Singapore. It will be a fenfale about 4ft to sft Bin high. The director of the Auckland Zoo (Mr R. W. Roach) said the price was 5250 Singapore dollars, and eight dollars equalled £1 sterling- “In considering the purchase of an elephant, it must be recalled that, in addition to the purchase price, the cost of packing and transport of an animal of this size would be considerable, and Singapore has the advantage of being close at hand." Mr Roach said. When he asked for money for new animals this year, he had in mind the probability of spending up to £lOOO on an elephant,
