COUNSEL COMPLAINS TO MAGISTRATE
CRITICISM OF POLICE ACTION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. A complaint by Mr N. R. Taylor that a police sergeant had refused him permission to see a client at a nolice station was made in the Magistrate's Court to-dav. Mr Taylor was appearing for Clifford Patrick Burnette, aged 34, a painter, who was charged wi*h assaulting Constable R. L. Smart in the execution of his duty yesterday. “I was asked by a friend of the defendant to interview him at the police station, and there I was refused permission to see him by the sergeant in charge,” said Mr Taylor. “Is that to be a matter for this Court?” asked Sub-Inspector E. M Thomas. <
It was the ground for asking for a remand, and was an interference with justice, said Mr Taylor. "It is hardly a matter for the Court to comment on without knowing the circumstances.” said the Magistrate (Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M.). He suggested it might be a matter for an inquiry. Burnette was remanded for a week.
