GAVILAN WINS NARROWLY

WORLD’S WELTER WEIGHT TITLE

(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 29. Welter-weight champion. Kid Gavilan. won a narrow points decision tonight in his 15 rounds title bout with Billy Graham. A Cuban negro. Gavilan won only because he built up a substantial lead early in the fight. Graham counterattacked strongly in the later rounds and won many of them decisively. Graham was able to do little to hold off Gavilan in the early rounds, but later he frustrated Gavilan’s style by ducking inside Gavilan’s overhand punches and landing solid lefts and rights to Gavilan’s body and head in close infighting. The referee awarded each man seven rounds, with one even but gave Gavilan 10 points and Graham seven. One judge gave Gavilan nine rounds and Graham six and the other judge decided each man won seven rounds, with one even. W" gave Graham 11 points and Gavilan 10.
