IS WAR INEVITABLE?

Sir,—When reading lately some remarks on world affairs, made by Professor Einstein in America, I came across this: “A new type of thinking is essential if mankind is to survive and move on to higher levels. Today we must abandon competition and secure co-operation. Future thinking must prevent war—nothing else will. Professor Einstein is acknowledged by all present-day leading thinkers, scientists and mathematicians to be the greatest of them all. I fee] sure that many good men and women in New Zealand will welcome his advice and try to live up to it. The terrible “tension of life” to-day is surely an indication that humanity is awakening to a more thoughtful and kindly way of living—perhaps even to true peace and wisdom. Hating, exploiting, and calling each other ugly names can only build a hell on earth—not peace —Yours, etc.. H. T. WILLIS. August 29, 1951.
