WIN OVER TALBERT IN U.S. SINGLES

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 29. The Australian, Frank Sedgman, to-day gave one of the best exhibitions seen in the United States singles championship when he defeated William Talbert, one of the four top United States players in a fourth round match, which lasted only 50 minutes.

Sedgman played brilliant tennis, being in perfect touch with every shot. The Canadian, Henry Rochon,, made Tony Trabert produce his best tennis before the American won in four sets. Dick Savitt, the top seeded American, did not play to-day. He has an infection in the left leg and may be forced to withdraw from the tournament. Earl Cochell was booed for bad sportsmanship in his quarter-final match against Gardner Mulloy. After Mulloy had the third set in his grasp, Cochell reacted by hitting the ball into the background hessian at the umpire’s chair and later played as if he had no interest in the match. He was reported by the umpire for the use of abusive language. Results :

OVERSEAS PLAYERS IN N.Z. TOURNAMENT

INCLUSION FAVOURED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. There had been disappointment in some quarters when it was suggested that overseas players should be invited to play in the national championships, said Mr A. H. Richards, chairman of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association’s management committee, at the annual meeting of the association in Wellington to-dav. Mr Richards said most countries welcomed overseas players in their national tournaments. They had in the past helped greatly to stimulate interest in the New Zealand championships, and it seemed that an effort could be made to encourage players from Australia. "Australian players have given our players a great welcome, and I feel sure that some of them are looking forward to the opportunity of coming here," added Mr Richards. The New. Zealand championships will be held in Wellington from January 5 to 12. A motion passed in .1949 that the championships were to be held in February, was rescinded. Mr Richards said that tennis players in the North and South Islands now numbered 28,432 and 13,388 respectively. The total in 1929 had been 26.242.

PROFESSIONAL TOURS OF N.Z.

MOTION TO ELIMINATE GUARANTEES LOST

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. A motion by the Waikato association that in future visiting professional tennis players should be given no guarantee, was heavily defeated at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association in Wellington to-day. The Waikato association said future exhibition matches should be played on a 60-64 basis of tne gross takings, with the local association providing all facilities. The Waikato delegate (Mr E. McCarroll) said lais association was strongly opposed to professionals receiving a guarantee for every match. They should take their chance, as theatrical companies did. A life member, Mr A. G. Henderson, said professionals came to the country to earn money, and must be given a guarantee. To tie the hands of the association would mean the end of professional tours in New Zealand. Mr A. H. Richards, chairman of the management committee, said that if the motion was passed, one professional troupe would by-pass New Zealand in the near future.
