CANDY BEATEN IN THIRD ROUND

The diminutive Canadian, Henri Rochon, caused the first upset in the United States lawn tennis singles championship at Forest Hills to-day when he defeated the’ Australian, Don Candy, In a gruelling five-set match in the third round. Candy had two match points In the fifth set but lost them on errors. The favourites for the title, Frank Sedgman and Dick Savitt, again showed splendid form to-day in winning their matches in straight sets. Results were:— Second Round.—Ken McGregor boat Fred Haglst, 3-6, 6-2. 6-2, 8-6; Mervyn Rom beat Malcolm Fox, 6-1, 6-8, 8-8, Third Round.—Herb Flam beat William Vogt, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4; Gardner Mulloy beat Henry van Renssealaer, 6-4, 6-1, 6-8; Victor Sjeixas beat Fred Fisher, 6-6, 8-4, 6-3; Bill Talbert beat Fumlteria Nakano (Japan). 6-2. 6-2. 6-1; Rochon beat Candy, 8-6, 8-10, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5; Savitt beat LOrne Maine (Canada), 7-5, 6-3, 6-8; Sedgman beat George Ball, 6-4, 6-0, 6-8; Earl Cochell beat Tony Mottram (Britain), 3-6, 6-3. 6-3. 8-6; Tony Trabert beat Jack Geller, 6-3, 8-4, 7-5; Budge Patty beat Vladslav Hecht (Jugoslavia). 7-5, 11-9. 3-6, 6-4; Hamilton Richardson beat Jack Tuero, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-2.

SEDGMAN (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 30. Mr Mercer Beasley, who has been coaching some of the world’s tennis stars tor nearly 30 years, to-day picked his best shot-makers of 1951. Most of the honours went to Australians. , Richard Savitt was classed as playing the most powerful all-round game on the courts this season, but Mr Beasley said that he regarded Frank Sedgman as the closest approach to the perfect player. His selections were: best service, Sedgman; best forehand, Sedgman and Savitt; best backhand, Billy Talbert; best volley. Sedgman: best overhead smash, Ken McGregor; best lob. Art Larsen; best footwork, Sedgman. "For tactics, you have to go along with an old-timer like Gardnar Mulloy, said Mr Beasley. "Herb Flam rates first in return of service and retrieving." Mr Beasley's secondary selections include Mulloy, for his backhand and passing shots; Victor Seixas, for his aggressiveness and counter-attack; and Flam and Trabert, for their dogged court fight, even when behind.
