GIRLS RESCUED FROM CLIFF
SEARCH AT WHAKATANE (New Zealand Press Association) WHAKATANE, August 29. A party of 20 men. including members of thj Legion of Frontiersmen, searched the hills by Whakatane Heads last night to find two schoolgirls who were missing from their homes at Ohope. The girls were located at 9 p.m. on a cliff ledge 200 feet above the Heads Beach. They could not be reached until 4 a.m. to-day. The girls had left Ohope during the day with the Intention of going into town and walking to the heads. When they had not returned by 7.30 p.m. fears were felt for their safety. About 9 p.m. one group of searchers discovered the girls on the ledge, but the men were unable to reach them. At 4 a m. to-day, Messrs Cutler and E. R. Hunt climbed the cliff face anc reached the girls, who were perched precariously on a ledge measuring only 12 feet by 4 feet. They stayed with them till daybreak, when the two girls were helped down the cliff face by the two men.
