WOMEN’S HOCKEY
SOUTH ISLAND BEATS NORTH ISLAND (New Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 29. Crisper circle play by its fast-moving forwards enabled South Island to beat North Island, 3-1, in a women’s representative hockey match at Melville Park to-day. A feature of the game was the confident full-back play of P. Hendry and L. Lennie (South Island), who Continually came in between the North Island forwards and put their side on attack with long passes to either wing. E. Bain, in goal, was sound, too. The South Island centre-forward, E. Lush, proved too fast for the North Island defence, and her hard driving in the circle earned her three good goals. The outstanding North Island player was P. Batty, who gave a polished display both on defence and attack. Jill Fraser was the better of the two backs, and N. Eglinton, in goal, used her feet to advantage. P. Rasmussen, D. Buchan, and V. Robinson rpade some effective breaks. Robinson's goal resulted from good combined play.
