COUNTER-ATTACK BY ENEMY
New Actions Begun In Korea (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) TOKYO, August 28. The Communists yesterday launched a wave of moderate counter-attacks along the central and eastern fronts in Korea. . _ They attacked south-east of Pyongyang, south and south-east of Kumsong and north and north-west of Yanggu. The Allies, generally, contained the thrusts but north-east of Yanggu withdrew slightly. In the east coastal sector South Koreans seized a commanding hill in the Kansong area and then repulsed a counter-attack. Allied warships off the east coast for the third successive day fought a duel with shore batteries hidden in a cliffside near Wonson. An American destroyer is reported to have scored ten direct hits on a Communist bivouac area. No Allied ships were damaged. „ . On the west coast two British frigates steamed up the Han river estuary to shell Communist troops and big gun positions near Pungdong. Allied aircraft claimed hits on 45 Communist vehicles in continuation of the campaign to impede the flow of supplies into North Korea from Manchuria.
