90 MILE AN HOUR CHASE
MOTOR-CYCLIST WITH PASSENGER
On a charge of exceeding the speed limit for motor-cyclists carrying pillion passengers, Trevor Percy John Sandford was fined £lO in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday by Mr F. F. Reid, S.M. His licence was cancelled and he was prohibited from holding another for six months.
Sandford did not appear. Traffic Officer C. S. Hansen, of the Transport Department, said that he had chased Sandford for nine and a half miles at speeds up to 90 miles an hour along the West Coast road between Church corner and West Melton about 2.45 p.m. on June 10. He had checked Sandford for a quarter of a mile at a speed of 80 miles an hour. At times he had not been able to keep up with him. “I wasn’t sure whether qe was low flying or speeding,” said witness. It was a fine Sunday afternoon and there was a lot of traffic travelling in the same district, said Traffic Officer Hansen. During the chase six crossroads had been passed over.
