RUGBY FOOTBALL PROTEST UPHELD

REFEREE’S DECISION DISPUTED POINTS FOR CONVERSION FROM TRY A protest from the Linwood Club against the decision of the referee of an under 17 grade match between Linwood and Merivale on Saturday, August 11, which was discussed at last week’s meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union's management committee, was upheld when the committee met last evening. A decision had been held over until a report was received from the referee. The club disputed the referee’s ruling in allowing a conversion from a try by Merivale, after a Linwood player had touched the ball during the charge, which, according to the club, was against the rules. Merivale won the game by 10 points to 9. In a letter to the union, the referee, Mr C. A. Roper, admitted that a Linwood player had touched the ball and that he was wrong in awarding the two points for a goal. Mr E. Ormandy, chairman of the junior advisory board, said that the player who touched the ball was a member of the Christchurch West High School under 18 B grade team, and as such he should not have been playing for Linwood. He had played at least four matches for the school side.

The question then arose whether or not the charge was a legal or an illegal one, since this boy was claying illegally for the Linwood Club. [The rules state that in the event of an illegal charge, if the ball is goaled, the goal counts.! The president (Mr R. R. Masters) said that was a separate issue The referee had admitted he was wrong in awarding the goal. It was decided to uphold the protest. Mr V. L. Jensen said another infringement had been brought to the notice of the committee, and that further action was needed.

It was decided to refer the matter to the permits committee. Player Ordered Off Field The union decided to write to the Richmond Club informing it that if E. Crobbie, a third grade A Richmond plaver, who was ordered off the field three Saturday ago, did not appear before the next meeting of the committee, he would be dealt with in his absence. Crobbie has been suspended until such time as he appears before the committee. The Rev. Dr. G. Harrison, for the referees’ association, said the committee should take some further action regarding Crobbie. The incident for which he was ordered off was the most serious of the season. The club had been written to before, but it had apparently taken no action.

Representative Matches Th* committee agreed to the recommendations of the competitions committee that the Canterbury Colts' team should play a North Canterbury team at Rangiora on September 8. and that the Canterbury B team should nlay Ellesmere at Leeston on September 29. The committee also recommended that the Canterbury B team should play Ashburton at Ashburton on September 22. but this recommendation was held over for further consideration.

The following were appointed managers of representative teams for Saturday:— Canterbury seniors v. South Canterbury at Timaru. Messrs R. W. Blazey and L. » senior reserve v. Wellington, at Wellington, Mr W. Lodge: juniors v. Ashburton, at Ashburton. Mr W. C. Dailey: fourth and fifth grades v. North Canterbury at Ranglora, Mr W. S. Mikkelson.

Mr Masters reported that the gate for O ta B° match last Wednesday was £404 and that the union's share of the gate for the Fiiian match last Saturday was about £2OO, out of the New Zealand union's share of £1465.
