THOUSANDS OF DAIRY COWS REPRIEVED
Throughout New Zealand, thousands more dairy cows would have gone to the sale yards, and been sold as butchers’ supplies during the past three years had it not been for penicillin. All these cows would have been lost to production owing to the ravages of mastitis (also known as mammitis) but now veterinary science has, in penicillin, a weapon that defeats mastitis and keeps dairy cows in. production. Glaxo Laboratories, a world-wide organisation that had its birth in New Zealand, and has led in the production and improvement of pharmaceuticals, has always been to the fore in the production of penicillin. Glaxo Laboratories (N.Z.) Ltd., Palmerston North, nave for nearly three years had available for dairy farmers a specialised penicillin udder injection called Vetspen Cerate, which was developed in accordance with recommendations made by the Department of Agriculture. Vetspen Cerate has been responsible for a dramatic reduction in herd and production loss during the last three years. —-Advt
